Innovative Solutions in Patient Care at ODC
At ODC, our dedication to research, innovation and patient care extends far beyond the dental chair. Recently, a remarkable case brought together our faculty and students in developing an innovative solution for a patient diagnosed with Schwartz-Jampel Syndrome, a rare condition affecting muscle tone and movement. Despite the patient’s strong commitment to oral hygiene, muscle stiffness made effective cleaning difficult.
Al Shaima Al Wardi, a Year 5 student, led the treatment under the guidance of our faculty. Understanding the unique needs of this patient, the team engaged in a collaborative approach to modify a Triple Bristle sonic electric tooth-cleaning device. By adding a custom-made silicone grip, they tailored the device to enhance its handling and usability, making daily oral care more accessible and manageable for the patient.
The device and its customization were provided entirely free of charge as a donation to support the patient’s oral health routine, forming part of a comprehensive, patient-centred treatment plan. This initiative showcases ODC’s commitment to research-led solutions and community service, emphasizing our dedication to fostering innovative care and making a positive impact on the lives of those we serve.
